A Step
Beyond

A Step Beyond (ASB) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is dedicated to transforming Chicago’s communities of color by leveraging the potential of their most valuable assets: people, businesses, and property.
We are committed to creating lasting, sustainable change that promotes economic empowerment, health, and stability. Our initiatives aim to lift individuals and families out of systemic inequality through real estate development, small business growth, education, and public health.

Our Mission: Building Healthy Communities

A Step Beyond (ASB), we believe that building healthy communities is the key to unlocking generational wealth and stability. Our programs address the root causes of inequality in communities of color by providing the resources, education, and support necessary to create long-term, positive change.
Originally established in 2008 as Providing U Motivation to Pursue Success (P.U.M.P.S.), our organization has since evolved and expanded its reach under the new name, A Step Beyond (ASB). With this rebranding, we broadened our services to focus on real estate development, small business growth, education, and public health. ASB remains committed to empowering individuals and creating lasting, positive change. Our efforts are transforming neighborhoods—one family, one property, one business, and one community at a time.

A Step Beyond (ASB): Building Healthy Communities

A Step Beyond (ASB) targets four key areas that drive long-term community transformation. Our programs are designed to create a ripple effect, impacting families, neighborhoods, and entire communities.

Real Estate Development and Community Revitalization

At ASB, we believe that revitalizing communities starts with homeownership and investment in local real estate. We help first-time homebuyers leverage grant funds to secure homes they desire, making homeownership an achievable reality for many families.
Our real estate initiatives also empower families to view real estate as an investment, guiding them to purchase properties that generate residual income and build long-term wealth.
Through strategic partnerships, we work to rejuvenate underserved neighborhoods with new developments, affordable housing projects, and beautification efforts. Our focus is on creating safe, vibrant communities where residents can take pride in ownership and reinvestment.
By tackling housing inequity and promoting community-based investments, we foster economic mobility and neighborhood stability.

Small Business Development

Small businesses are the engine of economic growth in any community. At ASB, we are committed to fostering entrepreneurship and helping small businesses thrive. Our programs provide essential resources, including business training, mentorship, and access to capital, ensuring that entrepreneurs have the tools they need to succeed. Through partnerships with lending institutions, and local and federal programs such as the Small Business Administration (SBA), we help business owners secure funding through grants and low-interest loans, and we provide ongoing support through workshops and consulting services. ASB empowers local entrepreneurs to create jobs, stimulate the local economy, and build generational wealth. By investing in small businesses, we create a foundation for economic resilience that benefits entire communities.

Youth and Adult Education for Elevation

Education is at the heart of our mission. At ASB, we provide youth and adults with the training and skills necessary to excel in real estate development and entrepreneurship. Through workshops, mentorship, and hands-on projects, we give participants the tools to build careers, start businesses, and take control of their financial futures. Our goal is to nurture entrepreneurial mindsets and equip individuals with the knowledge to succeed in high-demand industries. By focusing on real estate and business ownership, ASB prepares the next generation of leaders to drive economic growth and contribute to the revitalization of their communities.

Public Health and Wellness

At ASB, we understand that health is the foundation for all other aspects of life. Our holistic approach to public health emphasizes physical, emotional, and financial well-being. We provide programs that promote healthy eating, regular exercise, and stress management, helping families adopt lifestyles that support long-term wellness. In addition to focusing on physical health, we work to inspire and motivate individuals to pursue their goals and excel in all areas of life. Through wellness workshops and personal development programs, we encourage participants to cultivate positive mindsets, build confidence, and reach their highest potential. Our goal is to reduce health disparities in communities of color and empower individuals to take control of their overall wellness. With improved health and motivation, individuals can achieve economic independence, happiness, and contribute to a stronger community.
